The second time I woke, my head lay in Cale’s lap, and I had a smile on my face. The headache was totally gone and so were the queasy feelings from earlier. Doing a marathon was out of the question, and so was fighting Talos again, but I felt like I could sit up and drink some water.

When I looked up, I noticed Cale was sleeping too. He’d found a slanted rock and turned it into a reclining chair. Unwilling to leave my comfortable spot, I turned my head a bit and saw Pan a respectful distance away from us.

Hands linked behind his head to make a pillow, the sleazy Satyr was lying in a patch of grass with the sun shining down on him. Humming something under his breath, Pan seemed as carefree as anyone could ever possibly be.

I resented him for that.

And why were we all sleeping in the middle of the day? We should have been hunting Nymphs.

It took more energy than I expected to sit up, but the world didn’t spin like before. I didn’t quite remember what happened, but I remembered Pan laughing at my order when I told him to get his flute ready.

I cradled my head in my hands to hold it still. It helped me feel more grounded.

Eventually, I noticed Pan watching me.

“Feeling better?” he asked.

“Yes. Why wouldn’t I? We’re sleeping our lives away instead of doing what we came for.”

Pan snickered. “Somebody sure wakes up grumpy, doesn’t she?”

“Don’t start,” I told him.

I swiveled and put a hand on Cale’s shoulder. “Time to wake up, sleepy head.”

A set of Dragon eyes opened to stare at me. I scrambled up and put some distance between us.

“How do you always know?” Kyril asked.

“Eyes are the windows of a person’s soul. It’s easy for me to tell when Cale isn’t the one looking out of them.”

Kyril rolled forward and stretched out his arms and legs. “If we must sleep on the ground, it would be preferable to do it as a Dragon. You can’t feel rocks through scales. Nor do you get stiff muscles. Human bodies are frail.”

I sighed. “Why didn’t Cale stay?”

Kyril shrugged. “Your head in his lap had him feeling amorous. He was having some problems controlling himself. I’ve had centuries more practice in such things.”

“Oh,” I said, as a flush climbed my face.

It took a lot to embarrass me, but this conversation in front of a snickering Pan caused an instant reaction. These two males made me feel like I was walking around naked in front of them all the time, when I knew good and well that I wasn’t luring either of them.

I’d had less female composure problems sharing camps with entire armies of Roman soldiers than I had with these two.

Cale’s mercurial personality switches were throwing me off my woman warrior game. I wanted my champion back, and I wanted us to be normal.

Pretending my face was neither red nor hot, I looked at Pan. “Any sign of the Nymphs?”

“I’ve been playing my flute, but they’re not coming out to play.
